Q: How was Chugach Alaska Corporation created?

A: The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, commonly abbreviated ANCSA, was signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon on December 18, 1971, the largest land claims settlement in United States history. ANCSA was intended to resolve the long-standing issues surrounding aboriginal land claims in Alaska, as well as to stimulate economic development throughout Alaska. The settlement extinguished Alaska Native claims to the land by transferring titles to twelve Alaska Native regional corporations and over 200 local village corporations. A thirteenth regional corporation was later created for Alaska Natives who no longer resided in Alaska. Chugach Alaska Corporation was the last regional corporation to incorporate in 1972 under ANCSA.

The corporation is comprised of over 2200 Alaska Native shareholders from the Chugach region.

A: Chugach Alaska Corporation is run by a nine-member, Alaska Native, Board of Directors elected by its shareholders through an annual election process. These Board of Directors are elected by the over 2200 shareholders through an annual election process. Each Board member serves a 3-year term.

The corporation's day-to-day operations is run by a Chairperson of the Board, CEO, President, CFO, and various other officers. Chugach Alaska Corporation has over 300 employees at the corporate office and over 6500 employees worldwide.

· Nuuciq Spirit Camp
One of the most accomplished spirit camps in the State of Alaska, Nuchek is a cultural education camp held every summer on Hinchinbrook Island in the Chugach region. Chugach educators, Elders, and children assemble to learn traditional subsistence skills such as hunting and gathering on this sacred island.

· Cultivate a shareholder business assistance program to foster the economic self-sufficiency of the people.
