Smithsonian Spotlight: Eyak Language RevitalizationOn December 1, 2011 at the Anchorage Museum, UAA Linguistic Anthropologist D. Roy Mitchell held a discussion on how Eyak people are bringing their “extinct” Alaska Native language back to life. Recent revitalization efforts include holding language workshops, posting language lessons online, and holding bi-weekly Eyak language circles. These talks were made possible by the Smithsonian Institution and the Anchorage Museum’s Arctic Studies Center. Meet Nuchek Caretaker - Leonard Lange IINuchek Caretaker - Leonard Lange the II with his sons, Christopher and Leonard the III at the boat house that is used to build and store the kayaks and angiaks (open skin boats) for the Nuuciq Spirit Camp.
Their family history with Nuchek starts with Leonard Lange II’s mother, Marie Lange, whose mother was born at Nuchek. Marie has been involved with Nuuciq Spirit Camp since it began in 1994.
The Nuchek facility is managed by the Cultural Resources Department for cultural and educational purposes. Matt McDaniel is awarded Alaska’s Top 40 Under 40 AwardOn March 3, 2011, Matt McDaniel, Chugach Alaska Corporation Vice Chairman received the “Alaska’s Top 40 Under 40 Award” from the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and the Alaska Journal of Commerce at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska. Many important people from the business community were there including Anchorage Mayor, Dan Sullivan who addressed the crowd as keynote speaker. Chugach Shareholder Receives Honorary Doctorate of Fine ArtsMany of you know who John Hoover is and can spot his style of artwork from the Seattle or Anchorage airports to the Rose Garden at the White House in Washington DC.
Born in Cordova, AK in 1919 John’s artwork has been influenced by myths, stories and legends of Native cultures throughout Alaska and the Northwest Coast. He has spent his life commercial fishing, skiing, clam digging, and working with his hands creating new and exciting artwork for all of us to enjoy. was collected by a Russian named Lazarev between 1823-
1824, in Prince William Sound, Alaska.
This artifact is currently stored at the Peter the Great
Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera),
in St. Petersburg, Russia. The museum was kind enough to
share the image for educational purposes.

beliefs of the sea otter to Dr. Frederica de Laguna, he noted
that the sea otter... Recollections of Cordova’s ‘Oldest Eskimo’Big Delta, Alaska - Before the arrival of the Russians, the more southern Eskimo called themselves Sugpiaq — “the real people.” The Russians began calling them “Aleuts” which eventually applied to three somewhat differing Native communities.
Today, the Sugpiaq identify as Chugach Eskimo and call that earlier time Alutiiq or “yesterday’s Aleut.”

Chugach Regional Summit 2011The 2011 Chugach Regional Summit was held in Anchorage at the JL Tower Building on Thursday & Friday, January 27 & 28th. The summit was attended by Chugach shareholders and members from all over the region. Sheri Buretta, CAC Chairman, welcomed attendees and kicked off the event by bringing to the table many new developing problems that have faced our people and our communities.
This year’s regional topics included: suicide awareness and prevention, structure, youth development, employment and training.. Chugach Alaska Corporation Shareholder Descendant Registration is Now Online!Who is eligible? Anyone who is a descendant of a voting CAC shareholder. For purposes of this program a descendant is defined as child or grandchild.
How do I apply? Right here. Fill out the online Descendant Registration form or print it out and send it in with the CIB (Certificate of Indian Blood) and Birth Certificate of each descendant you register. If original documents are sent they will be returned. SBAP Applications are Extended! August 6, 2010Small Business Assistance Program funds are available to individual shareholders or descendants only for the startup or expansion of a shareholder or descendant small business. SBAP program funds are to supplement or match, and not replace, alternative funding resources. SBAP program funds must be expended within one year of the SBAP award. Tatitlek Cultural Heritage Week 2010The 2010 annual Peksulineq: Tatitlek Cultural Heritage Week event was held in the Native Village of Tatitlek between May 10th - 16th. It was the 16th year of this traditional event and it has been made possible each year through community sponsorship and generous support from various supporting regional and local organizations. 2010 Chugach Regional Resources Commission 12th Annual Subsistence Memorial GatheringThe Chugach Regional Resources Commission 12th Annual Subsistence Memorial Gathering was held on Friday, March 26th, 2010 from 1pm-10 pm and was a huge success this year! Over 700 participants attended and included many dance groups, the Moccasin Stompers Band, and the English Bay Band who played on into the night hours. It was a great event and many special thanks to everyone who participated and donated time to the huge potlatch. |
