Russian New Year's Celebration 2010 - This event is being held on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Romig Middle School at 2500 Minnesota Dr., Anchorage, Alaska. This year Chugach Heritage Foundation is the main sponsor with special thanks from Chugach Alaska Corporation, Tatitlek Corporation, Chugachmiut, and the Chugach Regional Resources Commission.
This event is held every year in the Chugach village communities and is known as "Masking". During this evening we are honored to present Alaskan Native New Year traditions. The Alaska Native Russian Program Players will present the new year and twelve new months, an MP, an old year, and three old months (referred to as “old ladies”). The old year and old ladies do not want to go and keep sneaking into the procession of the New Year, resulting in uproarious fun and comical performance.
We present this celebration in Anchorage because many Alaska Native people from communities influenced by Russian culture live within the urban Anchorage area. Thank you for joining us!
*We are currently looking for performers for the months of the year, old lady, and the New Year. The celebration is also looking for charity donations, silent auction art donations, volunteers, subsistence foods, and potluck donations. Call Angelina Sawden at (907) 563-8866 if you are interested in donating food, arts and crafts, or your time.
