Rebuilding St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church in Cordova, Alaska
On October 25, 2009 the new church was consecreated by Bishop Benjamin. Father Alexei Knagin, an Alaska Native from the Kodiak region and the resident priest of Cordova was instrumental in seeing this project through completion. A big thank you to Father Alexei!
Chugach Alaska Corporation, Chenega Corporation, and Tatitlek Corporation each contributed funds to help with this effort.
A majority of the church’s paintings in Cordova originally came from the "Church of the Transfiguration" at the village of Nuchek. After the devasting influenza epidemic of 1911 that swept across Alaska, Nuchek started to become depopulated and the church was falling into disrepair. The church at Nuchek was considered the "Mother Church" because it was the first church built in Prince William Sound.
Later in 1925, the church icons were displayed at the ground blessing ceremony in Cordova which was attended by numerous Native people throughout the Sound. In 2009, the icons have a new home thanks to the dedication and support of so many people and organizations who strive to keep our traditions alive.
